There are many children who come from a home with poor parental influences and surroundings. Most of these children, behave poorly in school, which results in a decline in their grades. Children whose parents encourage them to do well in school and stay involved in their education tend to do much better than children’s parents who do not (Koppich, n.d.). Unfortunately not every child has a supportive family in education and in the overall emotional development of a child. When parents converse with other adults while a child is present, the child picks up on how their mother or father is speaking. A family who uses foul language in front of their children and speaks in a foul language to other adults will result in the child speaking the same way to their peers thinking it is norm. Although it is hard for adults or school social workers to break the habits children pick up at home, peer mentors have shown to have a great influence on the children. As a peer mentor I have seen the influence I have on youth and how socialization can affect them. I chose to research the causes of behavioral problems and how a peer mentor could impact the behavior of youth today. As a peer mentor, I have seen great improvment on my mentees.
I focused my research on the parental influences, socialization with others, and socialzation with thier own kids. These topics have one main idea in common; the child's home life. As I look back at some key and pivotal moments in my capstone, I see that every child comes from a different home, with different habits that were picked up. The children whose poor behavior affected their overall academic performance, have the more difficult home life than those who do not. I have witnessed first hand the difference between a child who comes from a family that has aspirations for thier education and a family who soley has aspirations for the child's sports. Families who have more support and aspirations for their child and is involved increases the child’s chance of performing well academically (Koppich, n.d.). Children who come from families with such support perform well in school. However, the children without this family support, need a role filled in their life that will provide them with such a support. When a peer mentor fills this role for a child thier academic and behavior develop immensely. The reasons behind why peers or even adults have such a strong influence is simple, “mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter” (Mentor Impact, 2016). As I, along with my fellow mentors, help middle school students we see the impact of having a mentor can do for them and how thier faces illuminate when they know that we care for them. The bond made between a mentor and mentee is strongly influential to mentees which helps correct some poor habits that were picked up.
