I did my job shadow at Sports and Medical Science Academy and I shadowed the Assistant Principal of the middle school, Ms. Bertero. Ms. Bertero's main responsibility is ensuring the safety of all middle school students at SMSA, ensuring that each child's needs is met to an extent and ensuring that every middle school student is following the school rules. Ms. Bertero was not only nice but fair to every child that stepped into her office. I decided to job shadow Ms. Bertero because I somewhat want to take up working in a school setting, preferably an administrative position. I was thinking of what the job is like. Ms. Bertero gave me insight on the quick decision making she has to do every day, and the different problems within the middle school that she must decipher. She also allowed to me to be able to listen in on how she handles the typical middle school behavior and how the rules work in the middle school side. What I found most interesting about the job of the assistant principal is that there isn't a set chart on how to handle situations. Everything is quick decision making and using your best judgement to resolve the situation, whether it resolves in a hard consequence or a simple mediation between students, relies on the judgement of the Assistant Principal.
I enjoyed job shadowing Mrs. Bertero because she has a lot of experience with working with children in the middle school and knows how each child who steps into her office is. After job shadowing Mrs. Bertero I may consider become an Assistant Principal in the future or be a social worker where I can provide children the help they need. If I were able to do it again, I would job shadow her again to learn more about the decisions she has to make regarding students and parents.
