Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone project is about coordinating a mentoring program for our very own middle school students at SMSA with my partner Daquan Carr. I am interested in mentoring because I have done it for a year now and turning these middle school students into respectable young adults and helping them reach their full potential is truly satisfying. The main goal of our mentoring program is to guide the middle school students in the right direction and keep them on the right track for high school. For our capstone project Daquan and I will be he head mentors of our middle students. As head mentors we will pair up middle school mentees with high school mentors. First, we will interview each mentee and gain some insight on who they are and what they are like. Then we pick a mentor who we feel is best suited to help the mentee. Each mentor will have to be recommended by a teacher, be a role model student, adhere to all the school rules and can make time for their mentee. Once a mentor is paired with a mentee, they begin to plan their own schedule and meet each other whenever they have time. As head mentors, Daquan and I will be watching over all the mentors and mentees, to see how their relationships are going and to see if the student is improving. We will also plan some events for our mentors and mentees such as a dress down or sports events when available. Mentoring will take place in the school typically, or in a public area. My capstone project has already started and will continue to pair mentors with mentees until October. After October, we will begin checking the progress of our mentees.
My research question for my project has to do with the behavior of children at home and how it affects the performance at school. My research question is: How does home life affect a child’s ability to function at school and how can having a mentor increase that child´s ability to succeed. This question relates to my project because all of these middle school students come from different backgrounds and have different lives at home. Some middle school students from good homes perform better academically, yet behavior at school still fluctuates between bad and good. And when these children are paired with a mentor, their behavior either changes or remains the same. My question will help me figure out how life at home has a drastic effect on performance at school and how a mentor can turn that negative performance upside down.
My mentor for my capstone is Mrs. Bertero. Mrs. Bertero is qualified to be my mentor because she handles a variety of middle school situations with many middle school students. Being vice principal, she understands how to help children and knows how to balance high expectations for behavior and academics with sympathy and understanding. With her knowledge on approaching children and discovering the needs of each child, I think she can help me plan events and be a big support in what we are trying to achieve with our mentoring program. The learning stretch of my project will be the balance of having a friend and being their leader of this program, with expectations for the mentors. All of these mentors are friends of mine and if they aren’t doing what they are supposed to do, then how do I approach them? Another learning stretch will be learning the different needs and approaches necessary for different children. This part will push me the most because every kid is not the same. And the same approach will not work for every kid.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Narcisse
